Examines cognitive design in this piece of literature by Thomas Hardy.
Written in 2005; 1,575 words; 1 sources; $ 62.95
Paper Summary:
The paper shows that two of the techniques which Hardy used to develop his theme were topology and structure. He chose images, metaphors, and symbols in a very careful way, and he structured Tess's life into phases so that she is portrayed in different ways. The paper shows that in each of the stages, an entirely different set of circumstances operates against her. During all that happened to her, Tess remained pure and innocent, to which can be said, so what? The paper argues that the problem with her character is that she could not cope with reality, but she still represents many women in society today.
From the Paper:
"Through his character Tess, Thomas Hardy developed probably the most oppressed young woman in English literature. Even though she did nothing morally wrong, she was still condemned by her society and by the other characters. Angel did do wrong, but he regarded her 'sinning' in a much different light than his own. There is much more than the double standard involved in this novel, however."
