This paper discusses the changes in the character of Telemakhos in "The Odyssey" as he grows to manhood while his father is gone. The paper explains that Telemakhos is at first he is merely a young man who wants his father to return so as to save him and his mother from the suitors who are swarming around their home. More and more Telemakhos sees himself as his mother's best defense, and he is also set on protecting his inheritance from these predators.

From the Paper:

"In "The Odyssey", as told by Homer, Odysseus is delayed on his return from the Trojan War, leaving his wife and son to fend for themselves. Telemakhos is the son, and he grows to manhood while his father is gone. At first, he is merely a young man who wants his father to return so as to save him and his mother from the suitors who are swarming around their home. More and more, Telemakhos sees himself as his mother's best defense, and he is also set on protecting his inheritance from these predators. By the time Odysseus does return, Telemakhos is a young man who can stand beside his father and fight back at those suitors who have, literally, eaten them out of house and home. Telemakhos is a young man when we meet him at the beginning of The Odyssey. His father has been gone his whole life, and he has been left..."
