This paper is a deeper look into what suicide is all about. Suicide took the lives of over 30,000 people in 2002 ; there were also a large number of attempted suicides that do not result in death. The paper looks at the psychology behind suicide attempts, as well as the emotional pain it causes to those around the sufferers. The writer suggests ways to notice indications that someone may commit suicide and what can be done to prevent the final act.
From the Paper:
"Suicide is a personal act committed by someone who feels there is no reason to carry on with his or her life. A suicide attempt is a clear indication that something is gravely wrong in someone's life. Suicide took the lives of over 30,000 people in 2001 (CDC 2004). It is unknown for sure how many more suicides went unreported, as the social stigma of suicide is still prevalent. In 2002, over 132,000 people were hospitalized following suicide attempts and 116,000 were treated in the emergency room and released (CDC 2004). Unfortunately many people are successful in their attempts at committing suicide, with at least one in ten women and one of out every three men completing the act the first time they try (Bentur, Eisenkrafe & Lavee 331). Out of those who failed in their attempt at killing themselves in their first attempt, nearly 50% of those make an additional attempt, often times succeeding (Hirschfeld 1997). In the United States suicide is the 11th leading cause of death overall (MMWR 2004). In 2001, suicide was the third leading cause of death among persons aged 10-19 years of age (MMWR 1994). Non-fatal attempts at suicide are estimated to be one of the strongest predictors of an eventual suicide (Hirschfeld 1997). Those who have attempted suicide carry a risk of suicide 100 times greater than that of the general population during the year following their attempt."
