Paper Summary:

This paper examines the efficacy of a speech delivery by televangelist, Creplo A. Dollar, during a sermon, "Love like God." The author examines the different tools utilized by the preacher to engage the audience, including hand gestures, portable microphones, and costumes.

"When Dr. Dollar began speaking to the audience he used several tools to encourage active listening. Dr. Dollar had a microphone that was clipped to his tie which allowed him to move back and forth on the stage and have his voice amplified so the whole auditorium could hear every word he had to say. The podium was used to lean on as a metaphor that God was the podium and can be leaned on for support or that Dr. Dollar needed to catch his breath. Dr. Dollar requested audience participation when he asked, 'Do you have love in God?' He repeated his question two more times, each time louder. The audience responded, 'Yes,' and each time their responses were louder (Pearson, Nelson, Titsworth & Harter, 2003)."
