1,403 words (approx. 5.6 pages) | 6 sources | MLA | 2011 | United States
Published on: Jan 16, 2011

Paper Summary:

The paper outlines Shakespeare's "Othello" and then examines how the movie"O" presents the story of Othello in a more modern context. The paper notes the changes in the setting, names and occupations of the main characters, and points out how the film introduces new ideas such as drug consumption. However, the paper also shows how "O" and 'Othello" share commonalities in the storyline. The paper reaches the conclusion that the contemporary setting of the movie may make the play more accessible to modern viewers, however, it becomes a different story, with a different focus.

From the Paper:

"In this era of rapid technological change and the internet, the focus of the youth seems to be shifting from traditional scholarly interests to more modern concerns. The most relevant example in this sense might easily be constituted by the reduced interest in classic literature. Teachers argue that it becomes more and more challenging to teach classics such as William Shakespeare, George Bernard Shaw or Ernest Hemingway to an audience that finds it difficult to relate to the traditions and language at the time the works were written. The players in the creative industries, mostly the film makers in Hollywood, have understood this modern concern and have strived to adapt these classic stories in a way that they are more comprehensive in the modern era."
