Paper Summary:
This paper describes "Sex and the City" as a comedy about the attempts of four characters to achieve their desired outcomes, all related to views on sex and romance for each character. The paper consider Piaget's stages of development, specifically the fourth stage, and shows how underneath the humor and irony of these women's lives and the choices they make in Piaget's fourth stage, the implications of human fallibility are realistic. The paper does emphasize that the show is ironic, and cannot be taken seriously, nor is it meant by the writers to be taken seriously.
From the Paper:
"A popular television show that was highly focused on development is the comedy Sex and The City. The irony of that show is that though it is basically a comedy, the show attained a high level of fascination, and a high level of emulation, due to the means by which it portrayed the main theme it was concerned with of character development, or on a broader scale, the final stage of Piaget's theories of development, which is considered operational.
"Let us briefly consider the stages of development to appreciate the impact of the show, and the perceptions of the show thereof. In terms of developmental psychology, the show is almost wholly concerned with a comedic presentation of the cognitive development of its main characters, which many audiences took very seriously, while others clearly simply laughed."
