Paper Summary:

The paper discusses how "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead" provides a different take on the lives of two minor characters in Shakespeare's "Hamlet". The paper shows how in Shakespeare's play, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are minor faceless characters that are used mainly as plot devices, but in Stoppard's play, they become the focus of the story. The paper highlights Rosencrantz and Guildenstern's inability to discover their own identities and know why they were created and what their purpose was in life.

From the Paper:

"Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead provides a different take on the lives of two minor characters in Shakespeare's Hamlet. In Shakespeare's play, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are minor faceless characters that are used mainly as plot devices, but in Stoppard's play, they become the focus of the story while the Hamlet figures flip-flop and in turn become the plot devices. The new look retains the idea that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern cannot nor will not change the outcome of anything, but nonetheless they still play a perhaps unexpected role in Hamlet. Stoppard uses this "faceless" quality to play on the fact that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are simply "actors" in an already scripted world, and therefore walk through life like most humans without ever even making a splash."
