Reviewing the Work of Noelle Fern
A look Noelle Fern's study on the connection between criminal sentencing and community characteristics.
675 words (approx. 2.7 pages) | 2 sources | 2006 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper reviews Noelle Fern's work on the relationship between criminal sentencing and community characteristics by examining a study she published in the Justice Quarterly in December of 2005. The paper explores Fern's basic hypotheses, her methodology and notes the inconclusiveness of her findings.

From the Paper:

'Specifically, the issue of how to punish, rehabilitate and otherwise treat criminal offenders has prompted sharp ideological divisions and an on-going dialogue about how to prevent crime. In the case of her 2005 study on criminal sentencing, Noelle E. Fern is not interested so much in whether criminals should be sentenced to jail, but in what factors contribute to some communities preferring jail time for the convicted while other communities are less likely to move in this direction. In the pages that follow, we will examine the relative strength of Fern's article by considering the depth of her research, her mastery of the appropriate concepts, and the validity of her conclusions. In the end, her work is a very good contribution to the existing literature.'
