Racist Discrimination in America
A look at racist discrimination in the U.S. and specifically, at the use of humor in dealing with racism.
1,269 words (approx. 5.1 pages) | 8 sources | MLA | 2009 United States

Paper Summary:

The paper shows how racial discrimination is part of the history of the US and its culture. The paper discusses the use of humor in discussions related to race and discrimination and asserts that this approach is not always a positive one; it may cause certain racial cliches to become entrenched in the popular culture of society. The paper also discusses, however, how dealing with race through humor is another part of the cultural identity of the United States. The paper therefore concludes that this approach must be considered with moderation, as it can easily instigate violence and hatred.

From the Paper:

"The American society is famous for its cultural, racial, and national diversity. It is often argued that the American culture is in itself a culture of immigrants, taking into account the history of the 19th and 20th century in particular. However, as the diversity continues to widen as more and more people from all the corners of the world chose the US as their new home, the discrimination issue is becoming more and more a problem of the US society. From the perspective of the last centuries, racial discrimination is a significant factor in the development of the American way of life. The African American problem, slavery, the Civil Rights Movement, all these were important moments in the history of the US which forced the American state to deal with the issue of diversity and the respect for human and civil rights."
