Words of prejudice and hate in Toni Morrison's "The Bluest Eye."
871 words (approx. 3.5 pages) | 0 sources | 2001 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper briefly examines how the terms 'nigger' and 'colored' are used in Morrison's novel. It discusses whether these are used as terms of hate or simple ignorance.

From the Paper:

"The "New Lexicon Webster's Encyclopedic Dictionary of the English Language" defines "colored" as belonging to some race other than white and "nigger" as an "offensive term of contempt-- a Negro." After reading The Bluest Eyes, I think that both of these definitions are lacking. Toni Morrison used "colored" to refer to a civilized black person, and "nigger" to refer to a worthless black person."
