Project management can assist many different types of companies to improve their productivity and effectiveness. In companies where there are a large number of projects underway at any one point in time, project management can be especially critical to the company's long-term success. This paper discusses the article, "Top Management's Role in Project Management," by Dr. Harold Kerzner, in which he addresses the role of top management in the project management process, with a particular emphasis on the importance of the project sponsor to the success of any particular project. The paper shows the relevance of the article in relation to managing a law firm and offers a critique of Kerzner's point of view.
From the Paper:
"This article provides some helpful information about the role of project manager and project sponsor with regard to a law firm, but in most small to medium sized firms, the project manager is likely to also be the project sponsor. This is because the management of cases is likely to fall to the senior partners who make the critical decisions. In larger firms, the senior partners might fulfill the role of project sponsor with junior partners serving as project managers and paralegals or legal secretaries fulfilling the role of project scheduler."
