Conclusion
From the Paper:
"The American Civil War is widely considered a pivotal historical event that directed the shaped of modern American society. So much historical focus is devoted to the evolution of the state-by-state breakdown with respect to the issue of slavery that it belies the importance of understanding its significance to the presidential politics of the era. Myriad individual conflicts arose in the decades preceding the presidential election of 1860, prompting various compromises intended to maintain the precarious equilibrium of political representation in government between the northern and southern states, particularly after the 1857 Dred Scott decision. Thereafter, the greatly magnified importance of slavery as a major political issue shaped the Democratic nomination conventions in conjunction with the road to the 1860 presidential race as well as the eventual outcome of the election (Friedman 2005)."
