Paper Summary:

This paper examines Plato's argument on learning and education in Book VII of The Republic. The author points out that, in the "Allegory of the Cave", Plato makes his argument for the dialectic method of learning through a dialogue of the characters of Socrates and Glaucon. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of the validity of the dialectic process in the modern world.

From the Paper:

"In Book VII of Plato's "The Republic", Plato uses the character of Socrates to discuss two models of education: the process of learning by seeing and the process of learning by questioning what is seen. This distinction is apparent in the "Allegory of the Cave," in which Plato, through the character of Socrates (henceforth referred to only as "Socrates"), demonstrates how the 'truth' that an individual see can differ from the 'Truth' of reality. These two models correspond to direct learning and indirect learning. Direct learning is that of 'teaching,' which Socrates did not favor. Indirect learning is that of learning through dialogue and reasoning, or 'dialectic' reasoning, which is the Socratic method. In his allegory, Socrates demonstrates the problematic construct of direct learning."
