Paper Summary:
This paper discusses Plato and the analysis of his work by Allan Bloom. The paper further examines Plato's belief that the philosopher is a lover of learning, and that this learning leads to a knowledge of ideas that was not embraced by society or political factions of Plato's time. The paper then examines the tensions that were created due to these beliefs and discusses the ultimate theories on how philosophers were expected to function within the social order. Finally, the paper discusses how these ideas remain in modern society, and draws conclusions based upon the research.
From the Paper:
"Plato: Philosopher versus Society Introduction Plato believed that man could be destined to consistently seek the truth in life, despite the personal harm that it would cause, or that a man could have devotions to other elements of life that often led him from the truth. These men were ordinary citizens that did not have the capacity to lead society because they could not comprehend society with great knowledge or wisdom. This was evident because the men that were consumed by thoughts of desire (in any form) were only capable of attempting to satisfy that desire, and not of considering all of the members of the social order, and of meeting their needs."
