Both internal and external publics are key in the communication process. The external publics consist of suppliers, competitors, customers, and investors. This paper examines the effectiveness of the communications process and impact of effective communications between Southwest Airlines and external public groups.

This process, according to Allen "establishes relationships and makes organizing possible." Allen defines communication as "the process of passing information and understanding from one person to another.
