Paper Summary:

This paper emphasizes the importance of the physical body in creating specific gender roles that inhibit women and strengthen men. It also analyzes the significance of reproductive organs and male hegemony. Various theories for behavioral differences based on gender are presented and examined. The paper also considers changing gender roles in today's society as women leave the home to pursue careers.

From the Paper:

"There are many different theories supporting the development of the patriarchal system, some using biological and genetic reasoning and others using social and environmental causes. The body comes to symbolize the cultural interpretation of gender. The motherly body of the female creates a gentle, passive and loving image while the strong body of the male creates an aggressive and violent image of man. Stereotypically, women are the altruistic, nurturing and motherly sex and are based on the fact that women give birth and historically have been responsible for child rearing. For example, the level of the hormone estrogen increases after giving birth and when a mother looks at her offspring (Goldstein, 179). "
