In introducing a critique to the play "Oedipus the King", we can see how this tragedy unfolds in the text and reveals the basis of a traditional tragedy. The basic characteristics of the play by Sophocles show a sense of broad moral dilemmas that are associated with the character Oedipus and his mother's tragic demise within the play. The elements of text reveal to us a traditional theme of tragedy, which is ingrained in the traditions of the classical Greek theatre in the period that Sophocles lived amongst. The tradition of the text will be tragedy and this best explains the background to how this play was formed.
