Odysseus: A Great Leader?

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses the positive and negative qualities of Odysseus' leadership in Homer's classic epic, "The Odyssey". Through a brief summary of Oddyseus' journeys and the actions he took in battle and after battle, the paper analyzes Oddysseus' leadership. The paper describes the strengths that made Oddyseus a great leader as well as the shortcomings that caused him, at times, to fail as a leader.

From the Paper:

"Odysseus was the military mind that came up with the idea of hiding troops inside a wooden horse, which allowed the Greeks to wreak havoc inside the walls of the city of Troy and thus win a war that had raged for ten years. That alone qualifies Odysseus as a great leader. However, he is also responsible for his men once the war is over. In this, Odysseus does not fare so well. All of his men die on the journey home. Granted, the gods are working against them the entire way home. However, Odysseus did make crucial errors that at times cost the lives of his men. Therefore, while it is clear that Odysseus is a very good leader who accomplished a lot, it is also clear that he does have certain flaws."
