An analysis of non-verbal communication through a review of Ekman and Friesan's research.
Written in 2004; 2,080 words; 8 sources; MLA; $ 65.95
Paper Summary:
This paper illustrates how Ekman and Friesen demonstrated the use of gestures to substitute, stress or elucidate words. The paper shows that their focus with regard to unspoken actions is upon the performance and not on the appearance. Also they classify such actions by their genesis, that is, inborn, experientially derived species worldwide, or particular to a background, group, species, or discrete, by their coding, that is, random, symbolic, or inherently encoded and by their practice.
From the Paper:
"In 1969, Ekman and Friesen delineated communicative nonverbal behavior as those actions that are evidently and knowingly planned by the sender to send out a stipulated message to the receiver. Their delineation does not take up the sharing aspect even though it takes up the aspect of purpose. They elucidate that there is no compulsion that communicative actions should have a common decoded definition; there could be communicative actions without information where the sender planned to send out a message but no one recognizes him.
