Paper Summary:
This paper discusses the recent implementation of the National Do Not Call List program in the US and discusses the effects that it has on businesses. In particular, the paper discusses how this list will change the way that companies market their products and services to the public. It also reviews employment effects, company effects and consumer effects due to the implementation of the list.
From the Paper:
"We do realize that our primary research tool only reached a very small population, however, from a consumer perspective, it is clear that the average consumer gets aggravated by telemarketing calls. On the other hand, many consumers respond positively to telemarketers and their phone call. The conclusion our group came to was that the telemarketing industry will be greatly affected by the implementation of this list. The end results will be increased costs for the company performing telemarketing and an increase in unemployment. We have shown the demographic of the average telemarketer. We have stated that many of these people do not have the resources or experience to be hired elsewhere. With the economy as fragile as it is at this time was it really a good idea to basically increase unemployment and force companies to close? What about an individual's Freedom of Speech? By implementing this list, many people feel as though the FTC has taken away their freedom of speech. Although there are plenty of other ways to advertise and solicit products, telemarketing is cost effective and creates jobs unlike mailing or television advertisements. The implementation has definitely impacted business efficiency and revenue."
