In the stories "Sophie", by Emily Carr, "The Gadabouts" by Gabrielle Roy and "The Summer My Grandmother Was Supposed to Die" by Mordecai Richler, the theme of motherhood predominates. However, as this paper will argue, it is a form of motherhood whereby the women's lives are radically restricted by the social definitions of motherhood in their respective social contexts.
