Paper Summary:

This paper considers the importance of middleware in mobile e-commerce, seeing it as a potential solution for some of the issues faced in this emerging industry. First the paper defines cyber-foraging, which is comprised of a series of algorithms for creating Internet-aware mobile devices of all types to interconnect with data staging servers to gain access to Web. The role of location-aware middleware and multiple taxonomies is also discussed. Diagrams are included to further illustrate system definition and radio frequencies. The paper also describes how middleware applications have developed in the 21st century. The paper concludes by stating that the potential exists for creating location-centric middleware that securely personalizes content distribution while also providing for secure, highly tailored shopping and purchasing experiences as well.

From the Paper:

"Cyber-foraging is comprised of a series of algorithms for creating Internet-aware mobile devices of all types to interconnect with data staging servers to gain access to Web Services that have the potential to both content and online ordering of products and service. Implicit in any scenario that m-commerce would be used in is the need to support multiple classifications of a given user's interest, preferences and previous purchasing by website. This collection of data is typically called taxonomy. The ability of mobile computing device users to create multiple organizations of their preferences or taxonomies based both on their broader location-independent interests in addition to their location-specific preferences, along with the order state engine, are critical for mobile e-commerce to be effective and fulfill unmet needs of users."
