Paper Summary:

This paper presents a detailed examination of the novel "Middlemarch" by George Eliot. The writer uses the novel as a launching point for a discussion about Victorian marriages. The novel portrays the way marriages were in that era which is easily compared to the marriages of today which are much more open and equal. The novel also questions women's positions in society and gender roles in the Victorian period.

From the Paper:

"Since the beginning of time authors have used their talents to showcase an idea or a theme. It is the stuff classics are made of and it is what makes them classics. The ability to draw out a theme from a story and discuss it for generations to come, provide a backdrop for examination as traditions and society change. One classic example of this ability is the novel written by George Eliot called Middlemarch. In this story the reader is taken on an openhearted adventure through the life of one woman who, because of the era of her existence, was not allowed to become a doctor, or attorney, or a gymnast. She was bound by the time in which she lived."
