This paper examines how the idea of marriage has been practiced in certain societies all over the world throughout history. It looks at how the traditional monogamist view that marriage is the joining of one man and one woman is now changing and how, nowadays ,it is acceptable to have a same-sex or polygamous marriage.
From the Paper:
"Schulman has a dozen bogus reasons marriage is "supposed" to be between one man and one woman. He savages Al and Tipper Gore's concept of a "marriage of the heart", rather than of the genitals. And he savages the idea that it is an "equipment" issue as well. What he does propose is that "Because marriage is an arrangement built around female sexuality" the institution of same-sex marriage will make women into its victims. (Schulman, 2003) First of all, he has not proven that marriage is built around female sexuality, and he probably couldn't. He might successfully prove it is built around the ability of females to procreate, with or without a male present, since that is the essential function in order to continue the species. But if he did that, of course, he would put males of this species on the same level as male bumblebees; useful once for mating, and then it's perfectly all right if they die."
