↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

The play, "Lysistrata, " which challenges and confirms the common notions of classical heroism is discussed. The different characters in this play are examined in detail in order to show their strengths, and weaknesses, as well as the roles they played in the society being depicted.

From the Paper:

"The lack of subversive ideology in "Lysistrata" can be seen even more clearly when one compares it to notions of philosophical tragedy in Plato. Consider that of the death of Socrates, as chronicled by Plato. Socrates chooses to die. He has been condemned to death by an assembly of common Athenians for refusing to respect the gods of that city. His friends offer to help him escape so he does not have to drink deadly hemlock. But Socrates sees this as an unacceptable means of conflict resolution. To die by drinking hemlock, he states, is the only intellectually acceptable recourse for him to take. He agreed to the trial he submitted to. All his life he benefited by Athenian protection, Athenian law."
