The news media is filled will stories of third-world societies falling apart under the burden of corrupt governments, racial intolerance, and crumbling human rights. However, sometimes writers are able to shine through with stories that allow us to see and know humanity. Through comparing a work of fiction and one of journalism that focus on specific stories of overcoming oppression, this essay explores the parallels and contrasts in the face of overwhelming circumstances and Western complacency.
