Life Stressors

Paper Summary:

In today's society, it seems that there is no end to the number and severity of stressors that we are exposed to on an everyday basis. Stress seems to compound in our lives and in our minds. Yet, fundamentally, the most common human stressors that contribute to unhealthy behavior are still the same as they were twenty, fifty, and even a hundred years ago. This paper examines those stressors, which include romantic breakups, death, economic troubles, discrimination, illness and physical injury, or threats to personal safety.

"The feeling of powerlessness that accompanies these situations of stress is often the real trigger for behaviors that may be detrimental to those around us. In a traditional sense the psyche of the wounded individual may inadvertently try to reassert control over something they do perceive that they can control and that is their behavior toward their family and friends, or those people in general. The reassertion of control can occur between an individual and his or her children or it can occur between a child and his or her aging parent. Those who are in the most vulnerable position are often the target of the rage or thoughtlessness that sometimes grows out of stress."
