Early on, she took to the visual arts and studied painting in Seoul's Hong-K University Graduate School, then lithography on a French government scholarship at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts in Paris. She has lived in New York City since 1998. Kimsooja is said to a generation of Korean artists that reached out to the world in the 1980s, participating in new Western interest of the time in all Asian contemporary art.
