This paper examines the books "Robinson Crusoe" by Daniel Defoe and "I wonder as I Wander" by Langston Hughes. It discusses how while Robinson Crusoe is a fictional character created by Dafoe and is based on Robinson's adventure stories, "I Wonder as I Wander" is an autobiography of Langston Hughes narrating his global travels. It demonstrates how both books are based on the experiences and the journey of the two key characters, one fictional, one existing. It looks at how both raise many issues related to journey, adventure and what one learns from the life and styles of various regions and what are the differentiating factors amongst the thousands of communities that exist in our world. It also shows how the books also highlight the strength one gains from braving the world and taking on challenges and having the courage to face the odds, learn from new experiences and mingle with the various societies that exist throughout the world.
From the Paper:
"If one evaluates these lines and of course, the entire book, one can figure out the conflict which Defoe is highlighting between adventure and security. This paragraph is clearly depicting the negative aspects of adventure by demonstrating it with the example of the disappearance of Robinson's brother and how if Robinson himself leaves home, it will bring misfortune to him. The perception that when one goes out into the world seeking new experiences and new prospects, one must also be prepared to face various challenges and unforeseen circumstances. In the lines quoted above, Robinson's father has tried to put Robinson in the right perspective urging him not to be dissatisfied with his life and not to leave the security of his home. The father tries to tell Robinson that he is neither rich nor poor and that there is no need for him to take a risk by going on an unknown voyage."
