"Stephen A. Kent at the University of Alberta Department of Sociology, writes that Scientology's founder L. Ron Hubbard has intended to use religion to shield the organization from tax while it rakes revenues. Hubbard also purportedly claimed that having it recognized as a religion would cut the possibility that the government will go against it for things like medical practice without a license. Scientology also downplays its religious claims when entering a country that might have negative attitudes to religious proselytization. Kent concluded that Scientology is anything but religion. It is a business, a political and cultural enterprise, and one that offers pseudo-psychiatry and pseudo-medicine."
