Analytical Essay # 116481 :: Irony in 'Fat Girl' and 'Soldiers Home'
This paper provides an analysis of irony as found in the short stories "Fat Girl" by Andre Dubus and "Soldiers Home" by Ernest Hemingway.
Written in 2009; 908 words; 2 sources; MLA; $ 32.95
Paper Summary:
In this article, the writer discusses that irony plays an essential role in "Soldiers Home" by Ernest Hemingway and "Fat Girl" by Andre Dubus. The writer notes that both "Soldiers Home" and "Fat Girl" are cleverly spattered with situations and motivations that bring about or result from irony. Without irony these stories would not be able to deliver an emotional punch and would not be quite as entertaining. The writer maintains that irony is imperative to the plot of each of these stories and without it the result would be insipid. The writer concludes that examination of each of these stories reveals the importance that the authors placed in irony and the care that each took to ensure that it was intertwined within the story.
From the Paper:
"The second picture contrasts with the first in many ways. The first is apparently crisp and sharp even allowing good examination of the men's collars while the second contains a blurry background and shows the soldiers in uniforms that seem to be too large for them. It is irony that a boy who grew up in a small town in Kansas, went to college and joined a fraternity would end up in a slovenly kept uniform at the end of the war perusing the countryside with an unattractive lady. Surely boys like this were meant for grander things?"
