"Some of the Irish settled south of Monterey and became prosperous agriculturalists while others settled to the north in Santa Clara and in Lucas Valley which is north of the San Francisco Golden Gate and became successful farmers. (Doyle) Ultimately, the San Francisco Bay Area became a prime area of settlement for Irish immigrants. (Doyle) The book explains that California was often the second place of settlement for many Irish immigrants. (Doyle) Quite often the Irish settlers had attempted to settle in more urban areas and had more knowledge of urban life than other foreign settlers and Americans who lived in more rural areas."
