Published on: Jan 01, 2008

Paper Summary:

The paper asserts that it is hard to avoid the fact that it is more difficult to secure a well-paying and secure job today than ever before - at least in the US manufacturing sector. The paper discusses how skills must be more specialized, people must be prepared to upgrade continuously, and the evolution of technology is such that certifications that guarantee jobs today may not guarantee them tomorrow. The paper explores what factor, more so than any other, forced the movement towards information workers and away from semi-skilled workers? Was it computerization alone? Was it the move towards globalization? Was it because companies decided to invest more in research and development in general? The writer of this paper believes that understanding which factor is (and was) the most important single factor in the growth of information workers in the new economy can give job market analysts and job-seekers a better idea of where trends are headed and what things workers need to look out for as they assess their job security.
