Paper Summary:

This paper first explains that, while the number of homeless children in the United States has grown, there is still an insufficient amount of research about this vulnerable population. Next, the author reviews three research studies, which underscore the serious negative effects homelessness has on a child's well being. The paper concludes that advocacy groups, social workers, shelter personnel and educational professionals must work together with these families to make sure that the educational and emotional needs of these children are adequately met.

From the Paper:

"While studies suggest that homeless children are at greater risk for developmental and language delays than the general population, Whitman, Accardo, Boyert, and Kendagor, believe that the programmatic responses to these children's special needs in early childhood and formal education settings do not appear to take into account sufficiently the complexities of the impact of homelessness. Educators are often challenged with difficulties in teaching homeless children. They are confronted with behavioral and learning problems that they may be unable to deal with."
