From the Paper:

"From the very first time this book was published, taking up the entire issue of "The New Yorker" magazine on August 31, 1946, there has been both praise and serious discussion about the value of "Hiroshima". On the one hand,. The dropping of the bomb saved countless thousands of American lives which would have been lost if the U.S. had had to invade Japan. In that instance, the use of the A-Bomb was a "good thing". It shortened the war. On the other hand, for the first time we can read and learn about the innocent victims of the decision to drop the bomb. This is not a book with an axe to grind. It does not really take "sides" arguing whether it was right or justified, nor not, to bomb Hiroshima (and later Nagasaki)."
