↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

The author of this review finds that Joseph Conrad, through Marlow, the main character, establishes his thoughts on colonialism in his book 'Heart of Darkness'. The writer also compares two of the characters and finds that Marlow and Kurtz are opposite illustrations of the human condition.

From the Paper:

"Albert J. Guerard, in his essay "The Journey Within," calls Conrad's Heart of Darkness a "night journey into the unconscious and a confrontation of an entity within the self." The true night journey can occur only in sleep or in a waking dream of a profoundly intuitive mind. Marlow insists on the dreamlike quality of his narrative. "It seems to me I am trying to tell you a dream - making a vain attempt, because no relation of a dream can convey the dream - sensation." In the beginning of Heart of Darkness, Marlow compares his ensuing tale of colonialism with that of the Roman colonization of Northern Europe, and the fascination associated with such an endeavor. Conrad, through Marlow, establishes his thoughts on colonialism. He says that conquerors only use brute force, "nothing to boast of" because it arises, from another's weakness or misfortune. "Heart of Darkness was written, consciously or unconsciously, from a Colonialistic point of view" (Singh 278)."
