As a scientist Diamond provides a broad view of things that can be attributed to ecological chance as well as explanations for man made and man driven events beginning with the ice age and traveling through history. The ice age and its many spectacular events are a focus of his work because it is the foundation by which the rest of the world history is based. While Diamond presents a fair and broad based overview of world history the reader cannot help but notice his particular love of New Guinea, which is where Diamond has worked for 30 years in field research. The focus is evidenced in many of the theories and details that Diamond presents in the book."
