↶ Look Inside
Paper Summary:
This paper looks at one major result of globalization, the concentration of wealth and economic power in industrialized nations and the resulting one-way cultural influence that these countries have on other countries.
From the Paper:
"Proponents of globalization thus look to ideals like London to argue for both the inevitability and the allied benefits of globalization. Technology requires the development of "global" cities such as London, to facilitate trade in the new economy. Additionally, Sassen also sees potential linkages among the immigrant worker population as another powerful effect of globalization. It is in this area "the formation of new identities" that the global city trumps the traditional nation-state. Many of London's Chinese population see themselves as both Chinese and English, an identity that has implications for forming local sub-cultures that are not based on traditional geographic locations. These new linkages place immigrants in a position to articulate new claims in the city, although their success at doing so remains to be seen (Sassen, 1999)."
