2,520 words (approx. 10.1 pages) | 6 sources | APA | 2009 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper describes and evaluates programs for gifted students and describes some of the problems with these programs such as the way gifted and talented students are identified. The identification
is almost always strongly influenced by the Sanford-Binet Intelligence Quotient (IQ) test in which IQ points are assigned for problem-solving, literacy and mathematical knowledge. The paper maintains that one of the problems with this method of identification is that measurement of IQ only measures certain abilities but may not mean anything in real life.

From the Paper:

"Positive programs for adolescents are distinct logarithms enforced by institutional and extra-institutional (sometimes political) interests, and they have not always been seen to be successful. In many cases, these programs are not specifically tailored towards the usually-small percentage of students who have special gifts and talents, and instead wind up cultivating student paranoia and negative involvement. Often, students are even profiled by these programs in terms of their style of dress or speech."
