A review of the many characterizations of Faust throughout German literature.
816 words (approx. 3.3 pages) | 1 source | MLA | 2007 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses the evolution of popular the German literary character, Faust. The paper looks at how, even though the key trait of Faust has remained basically in tact, many of the themes and ideas in the story of Faust have changed drastically from when it was first published. In particular, this paper examines how, over time, the Faust character changed from one whose quest for knowledge led to damnation to a character that was a positive enlightenment hero.

From the Paper:

"The evolution of Faust and the stories themselves can be seen in the difference in Faust before the pact is made with Mephistopheles in the two works. In the 1587 Faust tale, Faust is portrayed as a Christian who although quite the intellectual frequently lacked common sense, In addition, the Faust of 1587 studied the Holy Scriptures along with works generally considered to be tools of the devil, such as necromancy and sorcery. Goethe's Faust is a man of great wisdom. He has knowledge in every field and is well-regarded by his university peers. Faust however, is saddened because despite all his learning he has not discovered the secrets to life and the universe."
