Freeing of the Slaves in America

Paper Summary:

This paper attempts to fully flesh out the many roles and events that led up to the eventual abolishment of the terrible practice of slavery in the US. Specifically, the paper reviews the effect of the agricultural crisis, the destabilized idea of person ownership in general, the effect of the black soldiers fighting on the front lines for the Union army, and the actual Emancipation Proclamation and Lincoln on the eventual destruction of the notion of slavery, and the freeing of the black slaves in America.

From the Paper:

"Here, the author describes the agricultural crisis that gripped the South during the Civil War. With the need for agricultural goods ever moving toward the war effort, the plantations that had once thrived off staple crops were now experiencing severe difficulties with the decreased number of tools and farm animals. Therefore, the crisis forced the slaves on the plantation to farm simply to feed themselves only if possible. What happened more often than not, however, was that the slaves often abandoned the plantations and their owners altogether in order to survive. Any minor or weak allegiance that bound master and slave were simply broken in the face of the massive inflation and food crisis. Moreover, the food shortage and agricultural crisis during the Civil War which crippled the South also served to help cause the emancipation of the slaves, if only in the physical sense."
