From the Paper:

""The Grand Inquisitor" scene in Dostoievsky's novel "Crime and Punishment" requires careful analysis, for the author portrays a silent Jesus as the Inquisitor engages in a monologue about the willingness of people to submit to an authority. According to the Inquisitor, they forfeit their freedom because of fear, anxiety, uncertainty and disturbance, but also because they want to be members of a community in which "all will be happy." The implications of this choice are especially evident when Dostoievsky (2002) depicts the Grand Inquisitor to Alyosha through Ivan. Ivan has this ambitious church official threaten Jesus with heresy and he warns Jesus that he will, "condemn You and burn You at the stake as the worst of heretics."
