Free Will

Free Will
An analysis of G. Strawson's theory regarding free will and the dangers inherent in such a theory.
1,350 words (approx. 5.4 pages) | 2 sources | 2006 United States

Paper Summary:

In G. Strawson's theory, reactive attitudes comprise the basis of all responsibility, and there cannot be accountability for behavior unless those attitudes are adopted. By reactive attitudes, Strawson means the non-detached attitudes and reactions of people directly involved in transactions with each other. These reactive attitudes are essential in the determination or construction of responsibility. Reactive attitudes also explain how people become exempted from responsibility for their behavior. This paper summarizes and analyzes Strawson's theory about free will and discusses the dangerous implication of his theory which is that morality is unimportant because responsibility is reduced to a social construction.
