Frank Kafka's "The Metamorphosis"

This paper explains that "The Metamorphosis" starts out with the protagonist, Gregor Samsa, waking up in the morning, being late for work and realizing he has been transformed into a bug resembling a cockroach. The author points out that Gregor's dead body being swept away by the servant signifies that no one has any use for him. "After Gregor dies, his family is lifted of the imprisonment he had placed upon them. Immediately following his death, they all go out for a trolley ride. Something they missed doing while Gregor was alive, due to their confinement to the house. While on the trolley ride, they discuss how 'they will be moving to a smaller and cheaper apartment, but one that was better located and generally more convenient than their current apartment, which Gregor had originally found for them." "While they conversed on the way, it occurred to both Mr. and Mrs. Samsa in the same moment in looking at their ever more lively daughter"; "she had blossomed into a pretty and well-developed young woman."
