Paper Summary:

The paper highlights three instances where foreshadowing is used in Arthur Miller's play, "Death of a Salesman", to increase the suspense and add significantly to the emotional impact the play has upon the reader. The paper attempts to show how foreshadowing drives the play along as scene by scene, the past and future are filled in with events that are hinted and alluded to before they are actually revealed.

From the Paper:

"The play Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller is an excellent example of using foreshadowing as a literary device to build tension and invoke suspense. In many notable instances throughout the play, events take place that allude to future scenes. In some cases, the facts that are alluded to are in the past but have not yet been revealed to the audience. While there are many good cases that could be discussed, three in particular stand out in having a heightened effect upon the plot line and significant characters. The opening of the play, and the story that Willy reveals to Happy that he, "nearly hit a kid in Yonkers", foreshadows to Willy's ultimate end. The fact that the play opens with a clue towards its ending is ironic."
