?In the short story, ?Floating,? by Karen Brennan, the symbolism points to the fact that the woman has been deeply affected by a miscarriage, which results in the loss of her mind to dementia and to a half-dead nature. Although the story may give the impression that the woman, herself, is actually dead, the actions of her husband disprove this theory while simultaneously proving the inexistence of an actual baby. Even the tangential Satan news story fits into this alternate interpretation of the story. It was a confusing set of conclusions to come to, but all of these interpretations are supported by the story.?
