The concept of being an essential, although not major, player, from which the novel gets its title, is very pertinent to Davies portrayal of war in Fifth Business. Using a style that is mythic, theatrical, and satirical, Davies presents Ramsay's specific experiences in World War I in a way that makes them universally applicable to anyone's experience of war anywhere, anytime."
