↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

A comparative analysis of the views of the female gender role as seen in the character Elisa Allen from "The Chrysanthemums," by John Steinbeck, and as defined by Diane Barthel in "A Gentleman and a Consumer."

From the Paper:

"Elisa Allen in "The Chrysanthemums" is an unusual woman, who seems to fit in very nicely with Barthel's view of advertising and how advertisers see women in the United States. She lets her husband make the major (buying) decisions; she keeps a "hard-swept looking little house, with hard-polished windows" and a perfect garden in front of a clean, well-kept house. She is a man's dream, and therefore she is the epitome of the wife of a man that the advertisers would like to reach."
