"It is increasingly clear to the German high command that Hitler has gone too far. Poland is now a distant reality, and the Reich itself is directly threatened. Rudolf Hess attempts a landing in northern Scotland, and offers to broker a peace. The British detain him and ignore his claims. Finally, Adolf Hitler is assassinated in November of 1939. Walter von Brauchitsch assumes the position of Chancellor. Prominent Nazis are arrested, and Brauchitsch negotiates peace with the Allies. On December 7, 1941, General Gamelin and General Lord Gort meet with General von Rundstedt in a railway car outside Compiegne. There, the surrender of Army Group South and all German forces is finally signed. The fanatical reign of Adolf Hitler is over. He remains responsible for the deaths of over half a million Jews within the Greater Reich."
