"The issue of euthanasia is marked by very complex ethical issues, particularly for nurses. Nursing is based in and oriented toward an ethic of care. Furthermore, the nurse is morally accountable, and must be able to defend and justify every decision that is made. As Rodney, Burgess, McPherson and Brown (n.d.) state, "ethical practice demands that we understand the sources of the theories that guide us, including the assumptions that are embedded in them" (p.56). Nurses will be involved in the issue of euthanasia because of the progression of a patient's illness where goals change from "cure to comfort and from extending life to ensuring a humane and dignity-conserving death" (Scanlon, 2003, p. 52)."
